Gbegiri is the velvety Yoruba beans soup, made by peeling brown honey beans and cooking them down until they collapse into a smooth, golden puree. Palm oil, ground crayfish, onions and a measured amount of pepper give it body and depth without heaviness.
On its own it is comforting and mildly spiced. Served the traditional way it joins ewedu and tomato stew over amala to make abula, the combination many Nigerians in Kigali grew up on.
