Icecream Cake Jars in Kigali: A Whole Dessert, Sealed in a Jar

An Icecream Cake Jar from Jollof Bistro costs 7,500 RWF a jar in Kigali. It is a layered icecream cake sealed in a jar with a lid, eaten with a spoon straight from the jar, and it comes in six flavours: Epic Choco, Berrylicious, Coffee Caramel, Coco Pine, Nutella Crave and Oreo Cheesecake. We make them at our shop in Remera, and you can order them on VubaVuba or direct from us for delivery, pickup or dine in.

What is a Icecream Cake Jar?

A Icecream Cake Jar is a whole dessert built inside a jar instead of on a plate. Layers of cake and cream go in, the lid goes on, and it goes into the freezer. You take the lid off and eat it with a spoon.

When we started making these we could not find another shop in Kigali selling one, so most customers meet the format for the first time at our counter.

The six flavours

There are six now, and they all cost the same, so pick on taste and not on price.

Flavour What is in it Price
Epic Choco Chocolate cake under chocolate cream, with a fudge line down the centre. The richest one we make. 7,500 RWF
Berrylicious Berry cream over soft cake. Sweet, and much easier going than the chocolate jars. 7,500 RWF
Coffee Caramel Cake layers with coffee cream and caramel. Real coffee goes into it, so read the section under this table before you order one at night. 7,500 RWF
Coco Pine Creamy coconut icecream, sweet pineapple compote, moist cake layers. The tropical one. 7,500 RWF
Nutella Crave Hazelnut and chocolate, from Nutella, running through the cream with cake between. If that jar already lives in your kitchen, take this one. 7,500 RWF
Oreo Cheesecake Cheesecake layers with a seam of Oreo crumb through the centre. Closer to biscuit than to sponge. 7,500 RWF

Allergens. All six contain dairy and wheat, and Nutella Crave contains hazelnut, so tell us on WhatsApp if anyone eating has an allergy and we will say straight whether a flavour is safe for them.

If you want it decided for you: want it rich, take Epic Choco. Find chocolate too heavy, take Berrylicious. Not in a chocolate mood at all, take Coco Pine. You already know if you are a Nutella person. Buying for a group, mix them, because the price is flat and a mixed order needs no arithmetic.

Ask us which flavours are ready before you set your heart on one. Ordering is on the Icecream Cake Jar page, and the rest of the chiller is in Parfaits and Dessert Jars.

Coffee Caramel, and the coffee effect

This one is doing a different job from the other five, so it gets its own paragraph.

Picture the middle of the afternoon. You want a coffee, and about a minute later you want something sweet next to the coffee. That is two orders and two prices, which is why the 4pm break costs more than people expect. Coffee Caramel folds the two into one jar. Anyone who orders affogato, or tiramisu at the end of a meal, already knows the category, and this is that idea frozen and sealed with a lid on it.

Real coffee goes into it, which means it carries caffeine the way a coffee dessert does. We have not had it lab tested, so there is no milligram number here and we will not make one up. The sensible way to think about it is as a cup rather than a cake. Fine in the afternoon. If caffeine keeps you up, do not eat it late at night and then blame the jar.

Rwanda grows some of the best coffee in the world. Making a coffee dessert here rather than a chocolate one felt obvious.

The pairing is worth knowing too. Put any of the other five beside a black coffee and the jar starts tasting sweeter against it. This one holds its ground and goes deeper.

Cake jar price in Kigali

Ours is 7,500 RWF a jar, whichever flavour you pick. Prices around town move, so treat the other rows as a guide and only ours as fixed.

Dessert Rough price in Kigali Serves Keeps?
Icecream Cake Jar (Jollof Bistro) 7,500 RWF One person Yes, frozen or refrigerated
Whole celebration cake from a delivery site About 35,000 to 50,000 RWF A crowd A day or two, and it takes over your fridge
Cake slice in a cafe Around 4,500 RWF One person No, you eat it there

None of those is a bad buy. They are different jobs. A big cake is for a room full of people singing, and the jar is for every other day of the year. Want chilled rather than frozen? Our Premium Yoghurt Parfait and the rest of the dessert jars sit next to it on the menu.

Why the jar format works in Kigali

  • It survives the trip. A sealed jar goes in a bag on a moto and comes out looking the same. Iced cake on a plate does not.
  • It keeps. Put it in the freezer and it waits for you.
  • It gifts well. You hand someone a sealed jar and you are done. No plate to collect back later.
  • It stacks. Jars for an office go out on a tray, which is how most bulk orders leave here.

How to store and eat an icecream Icecream Cake Jar

Keep it frozen or in the fridge with the lid on until you want it. Straight out of the freezer it is firm, so give it a few minutes to soften, then eat it with a spoon. Carrying it across town in the heat? Say so when you order and we will pack it for the journey.

Ordering on VubaVuba, or direct from us

All of our products are listed on VubaVuba, Icecream Cake Jars included. VubaVuba is how a large part of Kigali orders food and it works well, so if the app is already on your phone, use it. We will not talk you out of an order that reaches our kitchen.

Ordering direct is useful for a few things:

  • You are talking to the kitchen, so you can ask which flavour we have more of today.
  • Special requests are arranged direct, like a jar set aside for a particular time.
  • Bulk and wholesale pricing is only available direct.

Both routes are fine. Direct is the one for quantity or anything custom. More on VubaVuba or ordering direct, and how delivery in Kigali works.

Cake jars in bulk for parties, offices and gifts

Jars are the easy answer when a group needs dessert. We sell by the tray, quote bulk and wholesale direct, and welcome shops that want regular supply. Send the number of jars, the flavour split and the date, and we will come back with a price. If dessert is part of a bigger order, see our catering for parties, events and office lunches.
